GEOL 100 - DISCOVERING GEOLOGY
Fall Quarter 1999 -- Course Syllabus
Section 03 - 11:00 a.m. M-F

I. TEXT: Introduction to Physical Geology, by Thompson and Turk. Text is required and is available in the EWU Bookstore.

II. EXPECTATIONS:  This course is Internet intensive;  that means you will need regular access to a networked computer in order to successfully complete all of the requirements of this class.  You are therefore expected to make time in your schedule outside of class for several hours each week when you can regularly and routinely log-in to the system to receive class announcements and complete weekly assignments and quizzes. But more importantly, my hope is that each of you will gain a rewarding insight into the study of the earth and the science of geology. However, in order to quantify this somewhat subjective expectation, grades will be given based upon your performance in the following areas:

  1. Lecture exams - 50% of course grade consisting of five (5) on-line quizzes and a final exam (comprehensive, also on-line). Each quiz/exam is equally weighted in the calculation of your final course grade.  No make-ups allowed.
  2. Internet and Laboratory Exercises - 50% of course grade. Most assignments in the course will be Internet-based and be assigned weekly. On the second, third and fourth week of the quarter you will be required to attend a special laboratory session. No make-ups allowed.  You must successfully complete all lab requirements in order to pass this course!  See the on-line lab guidelines documents for more information about the lab assignments.
III. COURSE POLICIES:
  1. Attendance - Daily attendance in lecture is not mandatory but is strongly recommended. Attendance is required in lab on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th weeks of the quarter. Rude behavior in the lecture hall will not be tolerated;  please don't come to lecture unless you want to be engaged in the discussion. Do not bring and/or consume food or drink in lecture or lab.
  2. Grading - A standard university grading scale will be utilized in determination of final course grades.
  3.               90-100%            3.6-4.0           A
                  80-89%             2.6-3.5           B
                  66-79%             1.6-2.5           C
                  56-65%             0.7-1.5           D
                  0-55%              0.0               F
  4. Cheating - Any form of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. If a student is found cheating on an exam or in any of the course assignments, disciplinary action will be initiated and a 0.0 course grade will be assigned.  All work that you do in this course should be your own. Please consult the on-line GEOL 100 Survival Guide if you have any questions.
  5. Make-up Exams/Labs - None allowed.  If you anticipate that you will have a conflict that may interfere with an exam or a lab assignment, please see me before that time. Every accomodation will be made, provided I know beforehand there is a problem.
  6. Course prerequisites - Basic math competency and a curious mind.
